We have - to date - traced the family back to Thomas Rand, who was born in the late 17th century, which is where the story begins...
Thomas Rand (died 1774) married in 1717 Mary Baker (born 1690, died 1763).
Thomas and Mary had a son, Thomas Rand (born 1717, died 1796), who married Elizabeth (surname unknown) (born 1730, died 1786).
Thomas and Elizabeth had six sons and a daughter, Thomas Rand, Samuel Rand (born 1751), Joseph Rand (born 1762, died 1808), Robert Rand (born 1762), William Rand (born 1763, Layham, Suffolk, died 1838, buried Colchester, Essex), Susanna Rand (born 1764) and James Rand (born 1769). William, a carpenter, married in 1791 Elizabeth Bentley (born 1761, Colchester, Essex, died 1837, buried Colchester, Essex).
William and Elizabeth had two daughters and two sons, Elisabeth Rand (born 1792), Thomas Rand (born 1794, Colchester, Essex), William Rand (born 1796, Colchester, Essex) and Ann Rand (born 1798, Colchester, Essex). William, a tailor, married in 1818 Sarah Wrinch (born 1796).
William and Sarah had two daughters and two sons, Georgiana Rand (born 1819), Mary Ann Rand (born 1821, died 1842, Colchester, Essex), William Rand (born 1824) and Thomas Rand (born 1825, died 1898). William, a carpenter, married in 1845 Clarissa Chater (born 1823, Colchester, Essex).
William and Clarissa had two daughters and five sons, Clarissa Rand (born 1848, Colchester, Essex), William Rand (born 1850, Colchester, Essex), Chater Rand (born 1852, Colchester, Essex, died 1926, buried Clacton-on-Sea, Essex), Frederick Rand (born 1854, Colchester, Essex), Alfred Rand (born 1856, Colchester, Essex), Charles Rand (born 1863, Colchester, Essex, died 1863, buried Colchester, Essex) and Sarah Rand (born 1864, Colchester, Essex). Chater, a carpenter, married in 1871 Lucy (surname unknown), born 1851, Colchester, Essex, died 1926, buried Clacton-on-Sea, Essex).
Chater and Lucy had two daughters and a son, Kate Rand (born 1873, Colchester, Essex), William Rand (born 1876, Great Clacton, Essex, died 1944, buried Clacton-on-Sea, Essex) and Alberta Rand (born 1876, Great Clacton, Essex). William, a carpenter, married in 1899 Mary Ann Dinsey (born 1880, Barton, Bedfordshire, died 1965, buried Clacton-on-Sea, Essex).
William and Mary Ann had four sons and two daughters, William Rand (born 1900, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, died 1980, buried Clacton-on-Sea, Essex), Lillian Rand (born in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, buried Clacton-on-Sea, Essex), Herbert Rand (born 1907, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, died 1991, buried Mistley, Essex), Edna Rand (born 1908, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, died 1990, buried Clacton-on-Sea, Essex), Leslie Rand (born 1910, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, died 2001, buried Clacton-on-Sea, Essex) and Stanley Rand (born 1917, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, died 2007). William, a butcher, married in 1924 Alice Maskell (born 1901, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, died 1994, buried Clacton-on-Sea, Essex).
Wiliam and Alice had a daughter and a son, Stella Rand (born 1929, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, died 2021) and Cyril Rand (born 1934, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, died 2012). Cyril, a police officer, married in 1956 Janet Palmer (born 1937, London).
Cyril and Janet had two sons, Christopher Rand (born 1963, Basildon, Essex) and Anthony Rand (born 1966, Chelmsford, Essex). Christopher, a journalist, married in 1994 Dawn Clayton (born 1967, London).
Dawn and Chris have a son, Alexander William Rand (born 2001, Cambridge).
